THE NEW MUSEUM FOR ORPHAN RUSSIAN AND EASTERN EUROPEAN AVANT-GARDE ART
Between 2004 and 2006, three collectors purchased a collection of Russian avant-garde Art from a German seller who claimed that he acquired the works when he bought the contents of an unclaimed shipping container in the mid-1990s. The artists represented in the collection include works by Kasimir Malevich, Lyubov Popova, Olga Rozanova, Aleksandra Ekster, and Alexandr Rodchenko.
This collection is surrounded by controversy and mystery. The Soviets never considered this Art to have any value, and it’s well documented that troves of Russian cultural treasure crossed the borders after the collapse of the Soviet State. These are likely some of those works. Over the last twenty-five years, there’s been a concerted effort to taint these works as being fake. They are not. This film is the first step towards creating a virtual museum to house and catalog these newly discovered works.
